ABOUT JACOB & LEANNA RAMSEY AND THE 2006 RAMSEY FAMILY REUNION:
Jacob and Leanna Ramsey were born around 1830 and 1850, respectively. They lived in Hurricane Creek, Toomsuba, Mississippi from around the mid-1800s until their deaths after the turn of the century. They could not read or write.
Official government documents indicate that Jacob Ramsey acquired 80.02 acres from the federal government in 1879 under the Homestead Act of 1862. It was rare for African-Americans at this time to know about the Act, to locate the land office to file for the homestead, to submit the appropriate paperwork, and to satisfy government requirements to finally obtain title to the property in their own names. Not only did they accomplish this, Jacob and Leanna also acquired additional property through several land deals. They raised their 10 children on their land in Toomsuba.
William "Boss" Ramsey, their youngest son, followed in his father's footsteps and acquired 40.01 acres from the federal government under the same Homestead Act. His land was adjacent to some of his father's land. The Ramsey Family learned early on that property ownership was the key to independence, control over their lives, financial stability and respect.
Descendents of Jacob and Leanna now live all over the country and world. They are accomplished individuals--an author/publisher, Gold Medal Olympian, war veterans, lawyers, CPAs, teachers, MBAs, PHDs, editors, nurses, bankers, government workers, self-employed business people and hard-working upstanding citizens.
The next Ramsey Family Reunion takes place in the Atlanta, Georgia area July 20-23, 2006. All descendents of Jacob and Leanna Ramsey and friends are welcomed to attend! Please come! We would love to see you there!
